Episode 003: Myles Dakan on Ringing Handbells
- Myles Dakan is the Deputy Ringing Master at Trinity, Wall Street in New York…
- …and is another graduate of the linguistics program at Swarthmore…
- …and is a shape-note singer…
- …and is a modern Western square dancer.
- Most of the time, though, we talk handbells.
- RingingRoom gets its due mention.
- Here’s a concise introduction to place notation from “The Learning Curve” and the booklet “Place Notation” going into more depth (CCCBR, 1984).
- Trinity has almost reopened.
- (And since Myles was gracious enough to mention it, here’s the quarter our faculty kids just rang in tower.)
Thank you, friends.

Matthew, thank you so much for this series of podcasts! I am a relative newcomer to change ringing, and am learning so much from these interviews. Your first four guests are people I met and rang with at the Boston AGM last year, and they were generous with their time and expertise, but of course I didn’t have time to “grill” them, so thank you for doing that for us! Fascinating and informative.
Thank you, Laura. Part of my impetus behind this is lamenting that when I’m around other towers I’m so torn between chatting with and getting to know other ringers and, well… ringing! So I’m glad this is scratching a similar itch for you =)
